MEDICO LEGAL IMPORTANCE OF SOME INJURIES IN WORKING EQUINES

Abstract


This study was carried on 1650 working equines (1125 donkeys, 375 horses and 150 mules) located in different areas in Giza Governorate during the period from February to December 2010. After complete examination of all cases, the total injured working equines were 730 cases (550 donkeys, 140 horses and 40 mules). The majority of injuries were lacerated wounds which represented 33.6%, 28.5% and 30.0% in donkeys, horses and mules, respectively. Abrasions represent (31.1% in donkeys), (27.8% in the horse) and (32.5% in mules). Injuries were classified according to its severity into simple, grievous and dangerous. Simple injuries represent a proportion of (49.1 %) in donkeys, (64.3 %) in horses and (62.5%) in mules. Grievous injuries represent a proportion of (38.2%) in donkeys, (25%) in horses and (25 %) in mules. Dangerous injuries represent a proportion of (12.7 %) in donkeys, (10.7%) in horses, (12.5 %) in mules. The study recorded that the most important reasons that lead to injury was the cruelty and beatings which represent (10.5% in donkeys), (7.1% in the horse) and (7.5% in mules). Injuries due to improper harness and saddle represent (22.7% in donkeys), (18.6% in the horse) and (17.5% in mules). Injuries due to overloading and overworking represent (17.6% in donkeys), (15.7% in the horse) and (15% in mules). This study showed that a small percentage of injured animal given long term of rest and medication until recovery represent (10.7% in donkeys), (4.2% in the horse) and (7.5%) in mules.
