Abstract

To investigate the prevalence of gastrointestinal helminth parasites affecting camels, a parasitological survey of 458 fecal samples from two breed of camels (Baldy and Sudani); of different age and sex; has been carried out during the period from March 2011 to February 2012. It has been found that 133 out of 458 examined camels (29.00%) were infected with Moniezia egg (2.25%), Ascaris egg (0.75%), Trichostrongylus egg (88.72%), lung worm larvae (0.75%) and Trichuris egg (21.80%), and while no trematode eggs were detected. The prevalence of infection was higher in animals of an age between 1-5 years than those aged 6-10 years (35.76% vs. 25.73%, respectively). Higher rate of infection was observed in spring and winter (38.76 and 26.00%) than summer and autumn (24.40 and 5.90%). Among the positive samples, the incidence of single and mixed infections was 85.70% and 14.27%, respectively. The infection was higher among Baldy than Sudani breed (34.06% vs. 21.60%, respectively). The infection was graded as mild in 57.20%, moderate in 26.97 and heavy infection in 15.78% of the infected camels.
